Mary Karr- The author of the story and the daughter of J.P and Charlie Marie Karr. Mary had little discpline as a child unless her grandmother was around. She cruses like a sailor and gets into to fights she cannot handle for herself. She is daddy's little girl and the only girl allowed at the Lairs' Club meetings. Mary was raped at the age of 7 by and older boy. She is known to be a "world-class" crybaby. Mary was the youngest girl to ride the "scary" rides at the carnival.
Lecia Karr- Older sister to Mary. Lecia is the fighter of the two girls and is said to be able to beat up the older boys. She is a Mommy's girl and was always the one who could put their mother to bed when she got to drunk. Lecia has a fear for roaches. She never took well to authority figures. She would always find crafty wasy to take Mary's money. She learned to tie her shoes at age 2 and read before 3. She got attacked by a man-of-war when they took a family trip to the beach.
J.P Karr- Mary and Lecia's father and known to be the biggest lair in the Lairs' Club. He is an alcoholic and a native American. He was in the military and is very violent. He works at the oil rigs and is part of the union. He does not believe in divorce. He was not liked by Charlie Maries' mother because he is too low class for her daughter.
Charlie Marie Karr- Mother to Mary and Lecia and wife to J.P. She is a smart women went to Texas Tech and Art school she is also a very talented artist. She was married seven times twice to J.P her marriages were out of lust not love. She has two other childern named Tex and Belinda. She has a mental illness and a drinking problem, also she takes baby asprin like candy. She took care of her mother when she got sick. She tried to kill herself and the childern three times.
Grandma Moore- Charlie Marie's mother. She does not like J.P and favors Lecia over Mary because Mary looks too much like J.P. She moves in with Charlie Marie, J.P and the girls when she gets cancer. She had to have her leg amputated. She always made Charlie Marie spank the girls when she thought they where being bad and even made herself a whip to spank them with. Mary found her when she first went into a coma before she died.
The Lairs' Club Men- Cooter, Shug, and Ben are J.P friends. They all would drink , tell stories, and play dominoes on their days off. They would met when their wives thought they were out paying bills and one wife finally gave them the name The Lairs' Club and it stuck because not a lot of truth was told there.
